Rumour has it the best way to acclimatise for the heat of the MdS is to spend some time in the last few weeks before the start... in heat chambers. These pretty much do what they say on the tin... enclosed spaces, bloody hot.
Why would you spend more time than you have to in 40-50 degree heat I hear you asking... well, we thought the same thing but gave it a go nonetheless.
After a slightly ropey start for everyone, we're all now well in the swing of things, knowing how to manage our core temperatures, monitor our hermatocrit levels and keep on top of our power outputs - I think we can universally say that this is a vital part of the MdS build up and would recommend it to everyone.
Thanks to Steve and the team at London South Bank University and the two Chris' at Kingston University, we've had the chance to run and cycle our way to heat acclimatisation to the extent that all four of us can now confirm that we can make it almost* from Clapham Common to Moorgate on the Northern Line without sweating.
*Andy still starts to struggle from Stockwell onwards.
