A big week… Managed to break 21 minutes for 5km this week which was fantastic. Heart rate was manageable and felt comfortable for most of the run.
It was also the week of the OMM, a 45km race in the Brecon Beacons. Looking at the weather forecast, it was 80mph winds and torrential rain. A bleak prospect. Terrain was hard work and Oliver (my housemate) and I pushed on through. Managed to cover 42km on the first day, so not sure where we went wrong. After a blustery night and being rained on for 14 hours straight, we got up for round 2. At one point, we were on a precipice (c.200m drop) having to walk 15 meters from the edge to stop us getting blown off the side. We finally reached the end after 29kms – Oliver had unfortunately twisted his ankle after 10kms, was in a lot of pain, but well done to him for finishing! Total race: 71km and 2400 meters of climbing = not pleasant.
Sadly our exuberance in finishing was short lived – turns out we mistook ‘AB’ for ‘AD’ at check point 10 and were disqualified (they were right next to each other!). B*gger!
Oh well, a good week/weekend of training (with 90km+) and good prep for December 7th when we have a 42 mile Ultra Marathon (huzzah!).
