Prior to Christmas, training was very frustrating due to small injuries keeping me 'off games' for 1-2 weeks at a time. Guess I can't complain too much as I still managed to fit in 4 official marathons - ideal as the UK Christmas weather is similar to the Sahara Desert!
Post-Christmas, training has gone very well with no significant injuries (touch wood). I put this down to four things:
(1) my phenomenal physical prowess (MOST IMPORTANT)
(2) my amazing physio Gary Brooks
(3) Kieren
(4) Bikram yoga (Jerry and the Team at Bikram Yoga Clapham Junction - you have been incredible!).
An average week would see me do c.4 big runs, 2-3 core gym sessions and 3-4 Bikram yoga classes. Social life has taken a bit of a hit, with most weekends spent running a minimum of 13 miles on both Saturday and Sunday, while carrying over 8kgs of backpack weight. The training has been brilliant, only downside is how much time I have had to spend with Kieren Unwin. Ouch! I often run in front, just to escape his chat. Must be a good sight for him and one to get used to.
Since The Pilgrims Challenge (66 miles in 2 days), my boss (unbelievably!!) let me have A WEEK PAID LEAVE to do some warm weather training in Lanzarote. Club Le Santa, if you're asking. On top of the 80km+ running, I cycled over 200km, played tennis and badminton, went swimming (with arm bands) and ripped a number of gym sessions (where I primarily focused on 1 rep max bench - up to 68kg BAM!). I also completed the Pull Up Pyramid challenge, easily completing my assigned 14 pull ups (with questionable form-EG). Unfortunately, the temperature only peaked at 23 degrees - not quite the 50 degrees we can expect in the desert.
With just over 3 weeks to go, heat chamber training has started, Bikram yoga is increasing and I can regularly be seen walking around in a fat-man suit. Mainly cause I like the look. The big struggle is going to be staying uninjured!! Dare to dream yet?
